Praised for his radiant tone, heroic stamina and compelling stage presence, Mexican-German tenor RODRIGO GARULL (formerly known as Rodrigo Porras Garulo) opens the 2025/26 season as Cavaradossi in Calixto Bieito’s Tosca at the Norwegian National Opera, as Tambourmajor in Wozzeck at the Auditorio Nacional de España under David Afkham, and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in Christof Loy’s Francesca da Rimini and Fedora. Further engagements include Tosca at the State Opera Hanover and his debut at the Teatro de la Zarzuela as Rafael in Loy’s new production of El gato montés.
In the 2024/25 season he was acclaimed for his portrayals of Verdi’s Otello at Theater Ulm under Felix Bender and Calaf in Christof Loy’s Turandot at Theater Basel. He also made his role debut as Manrico in Il trovatore and returned as the Prince in Rusalka at Staatsoper Stuttgart.
Highlights of the 2023/24 season included performances alongside Anna Netrebko in Daniela Kerck’s Turandot at the Internationale Maifestspiele Wiesbaden, debuts at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Hamburg State Opera (Madama Butterfly, Turandot), and roles such as Guido Bardi in Tobias Kratzer’s Eine florentinische Tragödie at the Norwegian National Opera, the Prince in Rusalka at Ópera de Tenerife, and Tambourmajor in Martin G. Berger’s Wozzeck at the Aalto Theater Essen.
Garull has appeared at leading venues including Teatro alla Scala, Glyndebourne Festival, Dutch National Opera, Oper Frankfurt, Oper Köln, State Opera Hanover, Berliner Philharmonie, Royal Albert Hall, Prague State Opera, and Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden. He has collaborated with conductors such as Charles Dutoit, Daniel Oren, Joana Mallwitz, Keri-Lynn Wilson, Dan Ettinger, Robin Ticciati, and John Fiore.
Born in Mexico City, Rodrigo Garull studied voice at the Mozarteum University Salzburg with KS Helene Schneiderman and worked privately with Antonio Carangelo, Maris Skuja, and Dale Foundling. He continues to refine his technique with Chris Merritt. From 2010 to 2015 he was a member of the South Thuringia State Opera, and from 2017 to 2020 a soloist at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe. In 2019 he made his debut at Teatro alla Scala as the Duke in Rigoletto alongside Leo Nucci. For his Calaf in Turandot he was nominated as Singer of the Year in Opernwelt.
Mr. Garull is a winner of the International Antonín Dvořák Singing Competition and a scholarship recipient of the Richard Wagner Association Würzburg.
